Mumia Abu-Jamal – Unique London Event: Change of Speaker

Date: Friday, 16 September 2011 - 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Location: Trinity Reformed Church, Buck St, London NW1 8NJ, Camden Town Accessible entrance, accessible toilet nearby.

Due to her child’s illness, Christina Swarns, lead lawyer for Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was scheduled to speak in London and Paris, has regretfully had to cancel her trip to Europe, and cannot be with us on friday night.

We are enormously fortunate that Prof. LINN WASHINGTON of Temple University, Philadelphia, is in London and has agreed to speak.

londonstrike_lwashington_1.jpgLinn Washington is an investigative reporter who worked with Mumia Abu-Jamal for five years until Mumia’s arrest in 1981. A native of Philadelphia, he has covered the case in detail since then, and is an acknowledged expert on both the legal and political aspects. Tomorrow he will review the key injustices suffered by Mumia as his case moved through the courts during the last 30 years. And he will present new evidence – some of which has never been considered by any court.

Selma James, who edited Mumia’s latest book Jailhouse Lawyers: Prisoners Defending Prisoners v the USA and has written the Introduction to the UK edition, will be in the chair.

jlcoversmall.jpgJailhouse Lawyers: Prisoners Defending Prisoners v the USA speaks for the creative and determined movement of prisoners who use the law against the legal establishment. It is published just as prisoners in the US demonstrate their massive movement against prisons as concentration camps of repression, humiliation and other injustice, with work strikes, hunger strikes and other courageous actions, crossing racial divides.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist whose conviction in 1982 for killing a policeman aimed to end his years of exposing racism and other corruption. His trial was drenched in racism: while Philadelphia was 43% Black, only two jurors were African-American. Throughout almost three decades on death row, Mumia Abu-Jamal has continued to speak out against injustice and to organise for his freedom and for that of other prisoners. This is his sixth book.
