GWS endorses IJAN delegation to World Social Forum Free Palestine
The Global Women’s Strike endorses IJAN delegation to World Social Forum Free Palestine, Brazil, November 29 – December 1, 2012.
We consider the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network (IJAN) our sister organisation because it is anti-sexist, anti-racist and anti-imperialist. While highlighting the struggle against a particular genocide – that perpetrated against the Palestinian people during 64 years of Israeli occupation – it opposes all genocide, ethnic cleansing and discrimination. As a Jewish organisation, its uncompromising opposition to Zionism has enabled many more people to speak out against Israel’s atrocities, including the present deadly assault on civilians in Gaza, without fear of the accusation of anti-Semitism.
The GWS’s perspective of ‘invest in caring not killing’ is based, first of all, on the struggle of mothers and other carers to ensure the survival of the human race, the planet and all who inhabit it. IJAN members use their own experience as anti-imperialist Jewish people to take direction from the Palestinian struggle. They look to Palestinian women who fight for the survival of their communities, to political prisoners, and to all grassroots organisers – rather than to one leader or another claiming to represent the people.
The water in Gaza is so polluted that babies are born blue due to a lack of oxygen. We will never accept that. We know that IJAN feels as we do: there is no baby who isn’t our baby, no woman struggling who isn’t our sister – that every massacre of the innocents in Gaza must be opposed and stopped. IJAN’s principled opposition confirms and reinforces ours.
IJAN’s new publication Israel’s Worldwide Role in Repression is a much needed contribution to movements for liberation and justice. Some of us are from the Caribbean, or Central and South America; our families were directly affected by military dictatorships. We are particularly glad for this exposure of Israel’s support for the repressive governments across our continent and the globe. The Israeli state sold arms to dictatorships that were openly anti-Semitic and that targeted Jewish people for murders and disappearances; they even stole the newborn babies of young women they had tortured and killed so they would be raised by their parents’ murderers.
Decades of struggle by the mothers and grandmothers of the disappeared have reclaimed many of the stolen children and reunited them with their biological families. And some of the officers Israel backed are now in prison after having been tried and found guilty for crimes against humanity. We must make sure that Israel too pays for its heinous crimes.
We hope that you too will endorse IJAN’s delegation to the World Social Forum Free Palestine and make a contribution to their expenses.
