UK launch: Campaign to Free Maroon (prisoner Russell Maroon Shoatz) from solitary confinement

Saturday, 5 May @ 6:00pm
Crossroads Women's Centre
25 Wolsey Mews, London NW5 2DX
All welcome. Entrance by donation.

From Troy Davis to Mumia Abu-Jamal to Bradley Manning to Hana Shalabi, from the Pelican Bay Hunger Strikers to the Georgia Prisoners’ Strike to Palestinian Hunger Strikers as well as FIPs (Formerly Incarcerated Persons) organising, anti-capitalist leadership has come from inside in the “Prisonhouse of Nations”, and from the campaigning support of families outside. Our rebellious young people and grassroots leaders are locked up in what are in effect concentration camps. We want them back! We need them back!

5 May marks the launch in New York City of the Campaign to Free Maroon organized by Scientific Soul Sessions. Join us for the first showing of this great film with: Theresa Shoatz Maroon’s activist daughter, Vikki Law (ex-prisoner & author), Rev. Edward Pinkney (Benton Harbor MI, ex-prisoner & activist), Frances Goldin (Mumia Abu-Jamal’s literary agent), Eric Gjertsen (Payday) and Selma James (Global Women’s Strike, editor of Jailhouse Lawyers).

image004.jpgRussell Maroon Shoatz was a member of the Black Panther Party and a founding member of the Black Unity Council. A brilliant movement leader, he is serving multiple life sentences for the 1970 murder of a police officer in Philadelphia. Now 70 years old, Maroon has spent 30 out of 40 years in solitary confinement (the last 20 continuously) -- held in his cell for 23-24 hours every day, deprived of social interaction & environmental stimulation, conditions acknowledged as torture. Maroon’s writings include: The Real Resistance to Slavery in North America and The Dragon and the Hydra: a study of organizational methods.
