Celebrate Global Women's Strike

On March 8, 2007, to celebrate International Women's Day and the Global Women's Strike, Welfare Warriors will hold a virtual protest faxathon while screening two welfare rights movies, independently produced.

The events will take place from 4 pm to midnight at the Mothers Organizing Center

For the virtual protest, the public will design and fax protest messages and artwork to politicians and administrators of state and county welfare programs to demand justice and fair treatment for families in poverty, children, and people with disabilities. Issues that will be addressed include and an end to W2 time limits and unjustified W2 sanctions and denials, as well as extended time for maternity leave and the right to a

W2 fair hearing. Virtual protestors will also address the dysfunctional nature of the Department of Human Services at 12th and Vliet

The movies to be screened are "A Day's Work, A Day's Pay" produced by Jonathon Skurnik and Kathy Leichter of Mint Leaf Productions and "The Wisconsin Plan in Nazareth" produced by The Laborers Voice-Sawt el-Amel. "A Day's Work" is the story of the struggles and triumphs of three New York City welfare recipients who become leaders in the fight against Mayor Giuliani's workfare program. "The Wisconsin Plan in Nazareth" portrays the struggle of families in Israel to end the forced work welfare program modeled after Wisconsin's W2. This will be the first showing in the United States of "The Wisconsin Plan in Nazareth."

Popcorn and pop will be provided to all the virtual protest artists and movie viewers.
