THE LAUNCH OF “EQUAL RIGHTS FOR DOMESTIC WORKERS CAMPAIGN”
Our Union will be officially launching our ongoing project entitled “Equal Rights For Domestic Workers Campaign” at the Arima Town Hall, Sorzano Street Arima on Saturday 13th January, 2007 from 3.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.
This national campaign seeks to foster public awareness and support for the inclusion of domestics within the definition of “worker” under the Industrial Relations Act (IRA).
This was a recommendation made since 2002 to the Trinidad and Tobago government by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, who also observed this as a principal area of concern.
A similar recommendation also came out of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Workshop to Improve the Status, Terms and Conditions of Work of Domestic Workers in the Caribbean (1997).
We are therefore seeking the implementation of this recommendation ie. To Amend the IRA to include Domestics within the definition of worker.
It is in this light, we take pleasure in inviting you to our Launch.
We thank you for your solidarity and support in our struggle to ensure equality of treatment for Domestic Workers in Trinidad and Tobago and look forward to seeing you at the Launch
