Following a teachers’ strike in May 2006 which was brutally repressed, teachers and their union Section 22, students, housewives, Indigenous & rural communities and organisations from most sectors of society got together and formed APPO – an alternative grassroots government. Over a million people have marched and picketed demanding the resignation of the state governor who came to power by election fraud, and women have occupied the state radio and TV stations. Support has poured in from all over Mexico. This new grassroots unity has been met by unprecedented repression: people have been disappeared, murdered, raped and tortured, and many are in jail. The International Civil Commission for Human Rights Observation, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Amnesty International have reported extensive and systematic human rights violations. Early Day Motion 1828 tabled by John McDonnell has been signed by 32 MPs. The people of Oaxaca are undefeated and determined to win justice.
Hear from these two key organisers about what is being achieved and how we can support it.
