Dear Lic. Francisco Javier Ramírez Acuña

FREE DAVID VENEGAS REYES

On 13 April 2007, David Venegas Reyes, a councilor of the Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca (APPO), was arrested by force in Paseo Juárez del Llano, in violation of his constitutional rights.  His detention is part of a wave of repression imposed by the illegitimate governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, against the women, children and men of Oaxaca who have been demanding their rights.

Mexico’s state of Oaxaca is one of the areas of the world where agriculture first began. Oaxaca´s historic city centre has been given Humanity Cultural Heritage status and is a popular tourist area.  Yet its population, especially its Indigenous and rural communities, have never benefited from the wealth their work has produced.  Many are forced to emigrate to survive, and the women who remain struggle with a double and triple day of hard work to support their families.

Since people have been protesting – teachers, students and their parents, Indigenous and rural communities, nurses, church people and many others – for their social and economic rights, repression has been stepped up; assassinations, disappearances, rapes and detentions against members of APPO, have multiplied.

We have been following the situation in Oaxaca from many countries all over the world and have been supporting the legitimate demands of APPO.  We will never accept this flagrant violation of the rights of the people of Oaxaca.

With our sisters and brothers there, we demand the immediate release of David Venegas Reyes, and that all those who have been detained or disappeared be returned alive and released.  No more rapes.  No more repression.  Out with Ulises Ruiz Ortiz.

Thanking you for your kind attention, we look forward to news of Mr. Venegas Reyes’s release.

Invest in caring not killing.
