Haiti: Five years of Occupation

Return Jean-Bertrand Aristide!   Return Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine!

On 29 February 2004, a US-backed coup, supported by Canada and France, forced out democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a hugely popular liberation theology priest. Two months later UN forces occupied and have been there ever since. They have been responsible for rapes and murders, while refusing to help a population devastated by consecutive hurricanes.

Local agriculture has been destroyed by US rice imports, and a tiny elite now profits from sweatshops which exploit an impoverished population. Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine, kidnapped 12 August 2007, worked ceaselessly with women and children victims of this and previous coups.

Following international public pressure there have been calls for justice in the UK and US Parliaments:
UK: Early Day Motion – Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine (1935)

That this House is extremely worried that there is still no news of disappeared Haitian human rights activist Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine who fought for justice for the victims of the 1991 and 2004 military coups against elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide; recognises that the world owes a debt to Haiti, the first country to abolish slavery in 1804, decades before the US and Europe, and that Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine represents this long revolutionary tradition; notes that many people are accusing the Haitian and UN authorities of not doing enough to find Mr Pierre-Antoine; welcomes the concern expressed by US Congresswoman Maxine Waters, actors Danny Glover and Vanessa Redgrave, Secretary General of Pax Christi International, Claudette Werleigh, and the Amnesty International report which also warns of threats to the life of Mr Pierre-Antoine's colleague Wilson Mésilien; commends the weekly vigils held in Port-au-Prince, London, Los Angeles and San Francisco for keeping Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine in the public eye; and calls on the Government to use its influence to urge the Haitian and UN authorities to double their efforts to locate Mr Pierre-Antoine and ensure the protection of Mr Mésilien. John McDonnell MP

USA: Congresswoman Barbara Lee has introduced a Bill calling for an investigation of the Bush Administration’s role in the 2004 coup.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters has issued a resolution to cancel Haiti's debts (CA-35).
