Every International Women's Day since 2000, women in 60 countries have taken part in the

Global Women's Strike

demanding that governments

Invest in Caring Not Killing
A Living Wage for All Our Work, Pay Equity in the Global Market

WE CALL FOR AN END TO EXPLOITATION AGAINST DOMESTICS AND LOW INCOME WORKERS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

BECAUSE DOMESTICS ARE NOT RECOGNISED AS WORKERS THEY ARE UNABLE:

  • to seek redress when they are fired
  • to receive compensation for years of service
  • to receive NIS Pension because it is not mandatory for their employers to register them with the National Insurance Board

 - NON UNIONISED WORKERS HAVE TO JOIN A UNION AND WAIT EIGHT WEEKS IN ORDER TO SEEK REDRESS IN THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR OF THE INDUSTRIAL COURT.

 - EMPLOYERS THREATEN WORKERS WITH DISMISSAL FOR JOINING UNIONS

LOCAL DEMANDS:

  • Amend Industrial Relations Act to include domestics as workers
  • Make it mandatory to pay National Insurance for domestic workers
  • Enforcement and Monitoring of minimum wages order
  • Enact Sexual Harassment Legislation
  • Amend Section 51 (1) C of Industrial Relations Act and remove membership in good standing to allow workers speedy justice
  • Scrap the Registration Recognition and Certification Board
The process for recognition should be simple to allow vulnerable workers the right to be unionised
  • Protection for Domestics under Occupational Safety and Health Act
