Invitation to Endorse a Public Meeting

“The New Haitian Revolution:
Resistance to US and UN Occupation”

Thursday, June 16, 2005, 7pm
 Holman United Methodist Church, 3320 West Adams Blvd, Los Angeles

We would like to invite you to endorse the meeting “The New Haitian Revolution: Resistance to US and UN Occupation,” which will feature three remarkable speakers who bring up- to- the- minute news of how the grassroots of Haiti are resisting the occupation and pressing for the return of President Aristide. They will also discuss building an international movement in support of the Haitian people. The event is coordinated by Women of Color in the Global Women’s Strike and the Global Women’s Strike/LA. Speakers include:

* Lucie Tondreau, Haitian activist, a member of Veye-Yo (the organization of Haitian activist priest Father Jean Juste), and of the Haitian American Grassroots Coalition;

* Ira Kurzban, President Aristide’s lawyer and former attorney for the Haitian government; and

*Pierre Labossiere, Oakland based Haiti Action Committee. Danny Glover and Congresswoman Maxine Waters are invited but we have not yet confirmed their participation.

President Aristide was kidnapped by US Marines on February 29, 2004, 200 years after the Haitian Revolution defeated Napoleon’s army, and Haiti became the world’s first Black Republic. Since the Feb. 29 coup, there are estimates that as many as high as 10,000 Haitians have been killed, and thousands of others imprisoned, jailed or tortured. As of the time we write, Prime Minister Yvon Neptune continues his hunger strike and is near death. The Haitian people, the poorest economically in the western hemisphere, continue to organize and protest despite the slaughter and repression. Your support, financial and otherwise, is critical.

Speakers will have to travel long distances to get come to LA. Below is a list of what we are requesting of endorsers; please check off what you are able to do and thank you for your support!

  • What are the legal issues involved in the return of President Aristide and in the occupation?
  • What role are UN forces playing in the occupation?
  • What about the role of the US and Brazil?
  • What impact is the occupation having on women, youth and entire communities?
  • What can those of us living in the US do to end the “Black Holocaust” going on in Haiti and to support the new Haitian Revolution?

President Aristide was kidnapped by US Marines on February 29, 2004, 200 years after the Haitian Revolution defeated Napoleon’s army, and Haiti became the world’s first Black Republic and the first nation born as a result of a slave revolution. The Haitian Revolution paved the way for the abolition of slavery throughout the Americas. Haiti also assisted with the liberation of Latin America by giving refuge & supplies to Simon Bolivar.

Since the Feb. 29 coup, there are estimates as high as 10,000 Haitians killed and thousands of others in prison, jailed or tortured. US Marines have been replaced by UN forces led by Brazil.

The resistance of the Haitian people has been remarkable. Get the most recent information and find out what you can do!
