Women pay the highest price for sexist and racist immigration policies.
Those of us in immigrant communities, like other low income women, work a double and triple day of low-waged work on top of the work of holding families and communities together; for those of us in immigrant communities this work is compounded by sexist and racist anti-immigrant attacks. Women pick up the slack when our families are separated by discriminatory immigration laws. We comfort those who are grieving for someone killed or deported and we care for those who are injured or orphaned as a result of the war against immigrants at the border. And day in and day out we do the work of helping our children maintain a sense of dignity in the face of an unrelenting racist and anti-immigrant environment, all compounded by the trauma and violence of poverty.

Immigrant women, in particular those of us from other parts of the Americas, are the majority of domestic workers in California, working at or below the minimum wage without the protection of labor laws. Those of us who are undocumented are denied access to welfare, healthcare and other benefits.

When we work in sweatshops we are paid next to nothing, with little or no environmental protections, and we are often subject to sexual and other harassment. And our communities are being criminalized. Single mothers of color and immigrants are the fastest growing population of those imprisoned.

Let’s march together as women, immigrant and non-immigrant, to say NO to immigrant bashing, scapegoating, low pay, no pay and overwork.

March initiated by MIWON (the Multi-Ethnic Workers Organizing Network):
Korean Immigrant Workers, CHIRLA, Garment Workers Center, Pilipino Workers Center and IDEPSCA, and endorsed by the Global Women’s Strike and many other groups. For more info on the Women’s and Girls’ Contingent call 323-292-7405, or email us at ruthtodasco@crossroadswomen.net
