Statement at Global Women's Strike by Donna J. Warren of 
Families to Amend California's Three Strikes

Locking up women for crimes of poverty and sending their children to foster care is a weapon of mass destruction used by the ruling classes. Bernice Cubie, a young mother of 3, is doing 28 years for possession of 48 milligrams of rock cocaine. 48 milligrams are crumbs. Bernice's children are robbed of their mother's love while the children are being prepped to enter the new slavery - America's prisons.

Prison is the new slavery where men and women are shipped to right-wing Republican districts to continue America's tradition of denying the vote to the imprisoned yet building congressional representation for bigots. Remember the 3/5th rule of the Constitution? It hasn't changed! No sensible society would lock up a mother for 28 years for crumbs of rock cocaine. But California's justice system where trials are unfair and attorneys uncaring, does just that! When has a poor person, black or brown, ever been tried by a jury of their peers? There are no juries of our peers; there are only scared white people and their Uncle Toms who gladly send black and brown women and men to prison for life to keep us and our children out of "their" communities. Look at what's happening in Clarita Valley today.

We can stop this but we must be organized!

Please join Families to Amend California's Three Strikes on Thursday, March the 24th, as we gather in Jesse Brewer Park at 6 p.m. to moan 11 years of the devastating 3 Strikes Law against our communities. Please help us organize and let the politicians know that the power is with the people and that we will no longer tolerate this insanity. Don't let them build any more prisons.
