Women demand that the military budgets are spent on family benefits

The rain spoilt their party but it didn't silence their voice. Yesterday the Global Women's Strike demanded, in a day that would be ruined by the bad weather, that all the money that the Spanish government dedicates to military spending – which is no small amount, 17.610 euros according to reports – are set aside for family benefits and, above all, to pay for the work that women do and which is not recognised anywhere: to care for the elderly, the children, the home etc. According to Sara Williams, member of the Global Women's Strike, the Spanish state is at the back of the queue in Europe when it comes to family benefits, since it only sets aside 0.9% of the total general budget. Invest in caring, and not in killing, was the theme of the six hour of demands and party that yesterday the women had prepared in Plaza Sant Jaume in Barcelona, but which had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Apart from Catalunya, about seventy other countries had also organised activities under the title "Global Women's Strike", and with the same demand.
