VENEZUELA:
WE HONOUR THE MEMORY OF JESÚS RIVERO Sadly, Jesús Rivero, the husband and compañero of Nora Castañeda, president of Venezuela’s Women’s Development Bank, passed away yesterday 30 September. Some of us in the Global Women’s Strike had the pleasure and honour to meet Jesús last August, a few days after the historic referendum that confirmed President Chavez in power by a landslide. Nora had told us about her husband in an interview during her US speaking tour in January-February 2004. She had married Jesús when she was 18 and they have four children. She spoke with great love and respect about how much she had learnt from this uncompromising Black man committed to anti-racism and revolution. Others in Venezuela told us that he was a teacher of the pedagogy of the oppressed and that, though ill for some time, he was a tireless worker. It was lovely to meet Jesús whose sharp look, commitment, knowledge and humour were clearly in evidence, as were the mutual love and respect he and Nora shared. Nora, our dear sister, friend and compañera in the struggle, has been our point of reference in Venezuela. We are with her, her family and friends at this sad time. The Strike has sent a message of condolence to Nora and her family at Banmujer. We will circulate any obituaries of Jesús that we receive. |
