Venezuela: One Year after the Popular Uprising Reversed the Coup On Saturday, May 31st, there will be a report-back on Venezuela, one year after a popular uprising reversed a US-backed coup against President Chavez. At a time of US invasions and wars for oil, come hear inspiring news of ways Venezuelans - 80% of them poor, mostly people of color - have changed their world, and won victories with implications for us all. The event will launch a new video that includes President Chavez and interviews with labor leaders, women and more. This April, Margaret Prescod was one of six women from the Global Women's Strike (GWS) who were invited to Caracas on the first anniversary of the popular uprising that reversed the coup. The GWS presented at the Women's Encuentro and Margaret, representing the Strike, was asked by President Chavez to speak at the final event of the International Encuentro. Learn more about what Venezuelans have won, including using oil revenues for the people of Venezuela and rights for rural, homeless, and indigenous people, for single mothers and for other housewives. Hear about the central role women have played in building and defending their "peaceful and democratic" revolution. The event is wheelchair accessible. Childcare, Spanish-language translation, and refreshments will be provided. Donations welcome but no one turned away for lack of funds. The report-back is organized by the Global Women's Strike and Global Women of Color Network WINWAGES. Co-sponsors include: Clergy and Labor Coalition of Los Angeles, Coalition for World Peace, El Sereno and San Gabriel Valley Neighbors for Peace and Justice, International ANSWER/LA, KPFK, and SCLC of Greater Los Angeles. Endorsers to date include: Action Resource Center, Alexandria House. The
