PRESS
RELEASE from 10 St Bridget's Place
Lower, Upon St Bridget's Day, the First Day of Spring, the First Day of February, a group of women from different parts of Ireland will gather together at 12 noon at Aras an Uachtarain to make a presentation to President Mary McAleese, on behalf of all those women who have lobbied during the past two years to have St Bridget's Day made a public paid holiday, in recognition of women's unpaid work and its contribution to the wealth and health of our society. (On 8 March 2000, Sen. David Norris put a motion forward in the Senate to that effect, which was supported in principle by all political parties.) The presentation will consist of: -
Along with the gifts we will also deliver a letter, asking the President to use her constitutional authority (in the spirit of Bridget) to consult the Council of State and convene a meeting of the Oireachtas, in order to examine the constitutionality of the permission given by Government for the US armed forces to employ Irish airports and airspace for the furtherance of their war in Afghanistan. Many of us believe that this war is morally indefensible, especially as women are the greatest sufferers from its destruction and waste: retribution is not a fit subsitute for justice: terrorism is not an answer to terrorism (as has been so movingly emphasised by many of the relatives of the September 11th victims.) Any women who would like to join us, and/or make their own presentation, should meet us outside Aras an Uachtarain at noon on February 1st. Any women who want to travel with us from Galway should contact Women In Media & Entertainment at 091-565430 or margaretta@eircom.net or Therese at 091-556177.
