Dykes go on strike Lesbians will take to London's streets demanding more rights for gay women as part of the Global Women's Strike on Friday 8 March. Wages Due Lesbians, the direct action protest group, will picket the capital's major buildings asking the government to legislate in favour of gays. Didi Rossi, spokeswoman for the group, said lesbians had yet to achieve the recognition won by gay men. "Often lesbians are forced to hide their sexuality and are fearful of reprisals", she said. "There are mums and co-mums who feel they can't go to their kid's schools because their children will face serious discrimination against them. "There are a lot of gay women on benefits and low wages who don't have access to a man's wage." Wages Due Lesbians will march with other women's organisations to the Institute of Directors, the World Bank, Ministry of Defence and the Shell Centre. Gay women from abroad will march with them. The group will demand the repeal of section 28, same-sex couple benefits and greater immigration rights for people persecuted because of their sexuality. The march will have a carnival atmosphere with drummers and dancing. "Theses are serious demands but we are also going to enjoy ourselves," said Rossi. Call 020 7482 2496 for details |
