Dear Friends, 18 February 2001 Join
us in bearing witness We are writing to invite you to take part in an event as part of the 3rd Global Women’s Strike. We have come together as women from different faiths because we want to take an active role in the Strike highlighting the message of our faith which calls on us to care for the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society and address the injustice that we see. We are planning to bear witness to our beliefs and will be praying with music, song, readings and silence for one hour on Whitehall opposite Downing Street. We invite people of all faiths and no faiths to join us. Our event will be part of a whistle-stop tour and cacerolazo Women Strike at the Global Killers which will target the corporations and other venues of those responsible for so much destruction and death (see enclosed). In the context of the “war on terrorism”, and the ongoing bombing of Afghanistan and Iraq we will be protesting against increasing military spending. It is an outrage that for example, in this country many people are still forced to live on the streets, whilst over $800 billion a year is spent on the destruction of human life. This is a women led action to highlight the essential role women play in the nurturing of faith. The hierarchy within religions means that whilst women do much of the day-to-day work it is mostly male clerics and priests who are seen to represent the religion. We also want to highlight that women in every country are the most exploited, are the poorest and work the hardest. Our action will also oppose fundamentalism in any faith because it is based on promoting prejudice, discrimination and injustice and is enforced by terror. Tragically many millions have suffered from the sexism, racism and homophobia that has been practised in the name of religion. We invite you to endorse this action and hope you will join us on the day. In peace, |
