Fight for the right to be recognised

I'M writing to invite readers to join the Global Women's Strike on International Women's Day on March 8, 2000. The strike was called in Ireland by the National Women's Council there, and the International Wages for Housework Campaign, based at the Crossroads Women's Centre in Kentish Town has made it global.

The global strike is calling for a millennium which values all women's work and all women's lives. Women make the world go round, raise and look after its entire population - but most of this work is unwaged and unrecognised.

Recent figures show that unwaged work contributes as much as £739 billion to the economy, yet two thirds of women working full-time do all the housework.

The strike demands include abolition of Third World Debt, affordable and accessible housing and transport, protection against violence, pay equity, wages for carers, full pensions, and paid maternity leave.

Women in many countries are already involved and events are being organised locally which all women are invited to join.

Women are invited to drop in to Crossroads (corner of Caversham Road and Kentish Town Road) to find out more about the strike, every Thursday 4pm-7pm or phone us on 0171- 482 2496.
