FOR WHAT: To endorse a 2-hour lunch break for women against no pay and low pay and for pay equity for all! as part of the 2nd Global Women’s Strike on March 8, 2001, International Women’s Day
WHY: Women in the US earn $.72 to every dollar a man earns. Black women earn $.65 and Hispanic women $.52 compared with white men.

But as appalling as those figures are, they are only for women working fulltime year round. Most women don’t do the same jobs as men and because of household responsibilities, can’t do waged work fulltime year round. On average, women earn 50% of what men earn, and women doing fulltime caring work in the home earn no wage at all and are not even considered working. Women do 2/3 of the world’s work for 5% of the income. 2/3 of women’s work is unwaged.

On March 8, 2000, women in 64 countries participated in the first Global Women’s Strike against no pay, low pay and overwork, and for a total change of priorities. In Philadelphia, we launched the Pay Equity Now! petition exposing and opposing US opposition to ‘equal pay for work of equal value’ in all international agreements. We were joined by an array of women’s, labor and community groups.

In 2001, we expect even greater participation. Already several trade unions in Spain and in the UK have endorsed the Strike and the call for 2 hours at lunch. In Philadelphia, we want to build on the success of last year’s effort by widening the scope and involving even more people. We are holding an event for 2 hours during lunch hours on March 8 at City Hall with meaningful, fun activities to press our demands for an end to no pay and low pay and for pay equity. We know that many women won’t be able to take off that much time. But showing international solidarity with women by taking whatever time we can is important to drive home the point that we are undervalued, underpaid and overworked, we are tired of it and we are just plan tired!

Please join us by endorsing the 2-hour lunch break, participating in our event, and/or doing your own event to focus attention on women’s demands against >>NO PAY AND LOW PAY AND FOR PAY EQUITY<< for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2001.
