Model Resolution to support the Global Women’s Strike

Dear Union Member,

This is a model resolution which we hope union branches, regions, women’s groups, Black workers’ groups, and other groups in your union will pass, to help promote the Global Women’s Strike 2002 and further its demands. Please contact us at the address below if you would like further information. Thank you!

This Branch/Region/Women’s Committee notes that:

On International Women’s Day 2000 & 2001, waged and unwaged women in 65 countries joined the first ever Global Strike called & coordinated by the International Wages for Housework Campaign. The demands of the strike included:

  • Equal pay for all in the Global Market.
  • Paid maternity leave, breastfeeding breaks and other benefits which recognise women’s important biological work.
  • International Women’s Day, March 8, to be an additional annual paid public holiday.
  • Payment for all caring work – in wages, pensions, land & other resources.
  • Protection & asylum from all violence & persecution against women.
  • Freedom of movement. Capital travels freely, why not people?
  • A complete change of priorities from military spending – now $800 billion a year – to basic needs – now only $20 billion.
  • Accessible healthcare, housing, transport, literacy & information for all.
  • Don't pay "Third World debt".  We owe nothing, they owe us.
  • Accessible clean water & non-polluting energy & technology for the cookers, fridges, washing machines & computers we all need.

These demands accord in large measure with traditional values of trade unions and the labour movement as a whole, empowering workers everywhere by beginning with those of us who have least.

A world which values all women’s work & all women’s lives
An end to no pay, low pay & too much work

Therefore this Branch/Region/Women’s Committee resolves to:

  • support the right of members to participate in the Women’s Global Strike in any way that is appropriate and assist in organising the strike, including by sending delegates (women whenever possible) to Women’s Global Strike meetings.
  • circulate information and news about the Women’s Global Strike to members and to the women’s officers/sections of the union.
  • include Women’s Global Strike information in Newsletters (model article you can publish in your union journal), and link the Union Website to the Women’s Global Strike Webpage: http://womenstrike8m.server101.com
  • encourage members who want to support the Strike to donate one hour’s pay.
  • call on the Regional and the National Executives to support the Global Women’s Strike both with a financial contribution and circulation of information.
  • donate at least £50 to the Women’s Strike Fund.
