Peru 2002
Lima

The Centre for the Empowerment of Domestic Workers (CCTH) is co-ordinating the Strike among grassroots women’s organisations & trade unions in Lima and the rest of the country.

CCTH is working with soup kitchens, lesbian women, trade unions and federations, MAM and Popular Folk Artists (young people and children) to circulate news of the Strike. Issued Statement  “We are workers but without a wage.” for May Day.  And held two cacerolazos in front of Argentinian embassy to support our Argentinian sisters . . . “12 noon: Demonstration in front of the Palace of Justice.  Each organisation must bring its placards with demands related to the Strike.  In your centres: put up your banners related to the Strike and one concrete demand of your organisation.  We will deliver all as one demand to Congress . . ”

On 8 March 2002, in Lima, CCTH and a number of other organisations went to the centre of town with loudhailers, and had a speakout. Thirty domestic workers participated and a number of feminists also joined them for the first time and invited them to speak about the Strike at their event on the 10th. The supporting groups included other domestic workers’ organizations, a group of older women, a trade union and the newly formed group of lesbian women with whom they have been working for some time. They then had a delegation to meet some Congress people and formally presented their Domestic Workers’ Bill (to get recognition of domestic workers as workers, employment protection). The Bill is now officially in Congress and they are campaigning for it to be debated and passed. They also presented the Strike demands, including refusal to pay Third World Debt and a statement they drew up together with the other groups, which included support for women in Argentina and Colombia, and the demands of lesbian women, including recognition of partnership rights, right to insemination and adoption, and inclusion of lesbian/bi/transgender in anti-discrimination legislation.
