Spain Strike report, 2004

BARCELONA: National co-ordination of the Strike in Spain.  The main event was postponed when technicians ruled it out due to bad weather, but woman journalist from mainstream paper El Punt interviewed the Strikers in the downpour.  "The rain spoilt their party but it didn't silence their voice.  Yesterday the Global Women's Strike demanded that all the money that the Spanish government dedicates to military spending . . . should be set aside for family benefits and, above all, to pay for the work that women do and which is not recognised anywhere: to care for the elderly, the children, the home, etc. . . .the Spanish state is at the back of the queue in Europe when it comes to family benefits.

ALICANTE: The March 8 Collective organised the Strike in several small towns and villages, featuring a universal symbol of the work which was not done that day - the broom.  BENIMASOT: The mayor proposed that brooms not only be put on the balconies but also hung from the lampposts at the entrance of the town.  CONCENTAINA: Brooms were put upside down on balconies to show women were on Strike, including the balcony of the Town Hall, where workers and mayor took part in the work stoppage.  Everyone congregated in the street outside for the reading of the Strike call.  The radio programme La Voz de Comtat broadcast an hour and half programme on the Strike abd International Women's Day actions.FACECHA: 6 March Stoppage at 12 noon and reading of Strike call. Women and girls carried their brooms upsidedown to show they are on Strike.

COSTA DEL SOL: The International Women's Association of Costa del Sol, in Malaga, had stalls & collected signatures for the Invest in Caring Not Killing petition in the local market and in front of the Casa de la Cultura in Sant Girola on 8 & 9 March.
