Following a teachers’ strike in May 2006 which was
brutally repressed, teachers, students, housewives,
Indigenous and rural communities and organisations …
got together and formed APPO – an alternative
grassroots government. To demand the resignation of
the state governor who came in by election fraud,
hundreds of thousands have marched and picketed, and
women have occupied the state radio and TV stations.
Support has poured in from all over Mexico.
Unprecedented repression has met this new grassroots
unity: people have been disappeared, murdered, raped
and tortured, and many are in jail. But on the first
anniversary of their struggle, the people of Oaxaca
are undefeated and determined to win justice. Hear
from these two key organisers about what is being
achieved and how we can support it. |
